Celebrate independence from home regrets with this list

By Birthright Title

We know, we know. The Fourth of July has come and gone, but we’re still celebrating the kind of independence that comes with having a place to call your own. Around here, homeownership is more than a set of keys. It represents freedom, stability and the chance to build something meaningful for your future.

Recent surveys show that plenty of homeowners experience some level of buyer’s remorse. Owning a home is certainly worth it, but it’s important to choose the right one. Sure, buyers often do have regrets. That’s normal, but still not what we like to hear. However, with a little planning and the right people in your corner, many of the common pitfalls can be avoided.

Here’s what NOT TO DO when buying your first or next home:

Underestimating the true cost of homeownership. Your mortgage matters, of course, but it is only one piece of the puzzle. Property taxes, insurance, utilities, repairs and regular upkeep can all affect what homeownership really costs month to month. Before you fall in love with a home, take time to look at the full picture. Expect the unexpected regarding repair and projected maintenance costs. It can make it much easier to enjoy your new place once the moving boxes are finally unpacked.

Rushing due diligence. In the modern market, it can feel like every decision has to happen immediately. Still, inspections, title work and careful review practices exist for a reason. Skipping over those steps may lead to surprises no one wants after closing day. We’ll have more on this in a second, but that’s why working with experienced real estate professionals and a trusted local title team makes all the difference.

Buying above your budget. Choosing a home that leaves room for savings, future plans and a little breathing room often leads to a happier homeowner in the long run. We know it is easy to stretch for a home you love, especially when it checks nearly every box on your wish list. But if the payment leaves little room for savings, emergencies or everyday life, that dream home can start to feel stressful pretty quickly.

Going through the process without trusted partners. One of the best ways to make buying a home feel less overwhelming is to surround yourself with professionals who know what they are doing and care about your experience. Your real estate agent, lender and title company (we hope you choose Birthright Title for that last one) each play an important role in helping your transaction reach the closing table.
